Piano Exams

Information For Students And Families

Piano exams can be a rewarding way for students to celebrate their progress and achievements.

In this studio, exams are approached as an opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills and understanding they have developed through their learning. The focus is on developing strong musical foundations, broad musical skills, and genuine confidence at each level.

The information below explains what is involved in exam preparation and the commitments required from students and families to help create a positive, successful, and rewarding exam experience.

Heading Are Exams The Right Choice?

Do students need to sit an exam?

No. Exams are an optional choice for students, not a requirement.

For some students, exams provide motivation, structure, and a clear sense of achievement. They can encourage students to work towards a long-term goal, develop discipline and perseverance, and receive impartial feedback on their performance.

Whether exams are the right choice depends on the individual student. Each student is different, with their own goals, interests, needs and personality. Exams are a great option for some students, but not the best fit for everyone.

In this studio, exams are viewed as one part of a student's musical journey, rather than the sole focus of their learning. A student does not need to complete exams to become a capable, musical, and successful pianist.

When will a student be ready for their first exam?

Most students take approximately 2–3 years of lessons before they are ready to begin preparing for their first exam.

Students transferring from another teacher will need to have been learning at Donna Hinkley Music Tuition for at least one year before being entered for an exam. This time allows the teacher to assess the student's current level, address any gaps in learning, and ensure they are well prepared for a successful exam experience.

How are exams approached in this studio?

Exams are approached as part of a broader musical education, rather than as an end goal in themselves.

Students preparing for exams will continue to learn a broad range of repertoire at their current level, rather than focusing only on exam pieces. The goal is for students to build strong foundations and feel genuinely secure at each level before entry for an exam is considered.

To ensure students have developed a strong foundation at each level, students will need to have learned at least 10 pieces at that level before beginning exam preparation. Many students will learn more repertoire before they are ready for an exam. This helps ensure that the exam reflects a student's overall learning at that level, rather than a small number of carefully prepared pieces.

Heading What Is Needed For A Successful Exam Experience?

Successful exam preparation requires a commitment from both the student and their family. Consistent practice, support at home, and access to a suitable instrument all play an important role in helping students feel confident, prepared, and ready for their exam.

How much practice is required?

Successful exam preparation requires consistent and purposeful practice.

Students preparing for exams will need to practise at least 5 days each week and follow the specific practice instructions provided. Effective practice requires students to focus on the specific goals and strategies outlined by the teacher, rather than simply repeating pieces from beginning to end.

The required length of each practice session will vary depending on the student's age, level, goals, and exam requirements, and will be advised individually.

Depending on the student's goals and exam requirements, longer or additional lessons may be recommended.

What support is required at home?

Parent support plays an important role in helping school-aged students prepare confidently for exams. This includes establishing and maintaining a regular practice routine, including reminding students to practise, and reading lesson notes and practice instructions to help ensure they are followed correctly.

For younger school-aged students, this also includes sitting with the student during at least some of their practice time to help keep them on track and ensure that instructions are being followed correctly.

What instrument is required?

Students preparing for exams must have access to a suitable instrument at home. This is essential for developing the technical and musical skills required for a successful exam experience. This means:

  • a regularly tuned and well-maintained acoustic piano, or

  • a digital piano with 88 weighted keys, a sustain pedal, and a proper stand

The instrument must be set up with an appropriate piano bench that allows the student to sit at the correct height.

Electronic keyboards are not suitable for students preparing for piano exams, as they do not adequately support the technical and musical development required.

Heading Practical Information For Piano Exams

What are the requirements for piano exams?

Different exam boards have different requirements. Depending on the exam board and level, exams may include a combination of:

  • 3–6 pieces (depending on the level)

  • scales and technical work

  • sight reading

  • aural tests

  • general knowledge

  • improvisation

Not every exam board includes all of these components. Some exams are completed in person, while others are submitted by video. Some exam boards run exams within set examination periods, while others offer more flexible options.

There are several exam boards available, and the most suitable option is determined based on what is best for the individual student.

How much do exams cost?

Exam fees vary depending on the level and exam board and generally range from around $100 to $250.

Exam fees are an additional cost, separate from lesson fees, and are payable by the student or family. An invoice will be issued before the entry is submitted, covering the exam entry fee and associated administration.

Who enters the student for an exam?

The teacher is responsible for evaluating whether a student is ready for an exam and for submitting their exam entry.

Students are entered only when they have completed all necessary requirements and are fully prepared to sit the exam. This helps create a positive experience and gives students the best opportunity to feel confident and successful in their exam.
